Most definitely. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/recipes\/how-to\/cook-with-fruits-and-vegetables\/what-is-jackfruit\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"3\">Jackfruit<\/a>? Just heat, stir, and add sauce. Voila: \u201cPork.\u201d Cabbage and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/recipe\/cauliflower-steaks-with-hazelnuts-browned-butter\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"4\">cauliflower steaks<\/a> are now mainstays on many restaurant menus across the country. And of course we can\u2019t forget about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/recipes\/healthy\/eating\/is-plant-based-meat-healthy\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"5\">plant-based meat alternatives<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But plenty of Americans are still eating their fair share of beef, pork, chicken, and turkey, and a substantial quantity of that meat falls under a specific umbrella: processed meat. About 22 percent of total U.S. meat consumption is processed meat, according to research published in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3045642\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\"><em>Public Health Nutrition<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What is processed meat, exactly, and what makes it different? A spokesperson for the USDA\u2019s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) confirms to BHG that \u201cprocessed\u201d is <em>very<\/em> broad in scope.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProcessed foods considered are anything that\u2019s \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/nutritionsource\/processed-foods\/#:~:text=The%20U.S.%20Department%20of%20Agriculture,,%20drying,%20dehydrating,%20mixing,\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">changed from its natural state<\/a>.\u2019 Most foods we consume are processed in some way, but this isn\u2019t necessarily a bad thing,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/cheerfulchoices\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\">Mackenzie Burgess, RDN<\/a>, a Denver-based registered dietitian nutritionist and recipe developer at <a href=\"https:\/\/cheerfulchoices.com\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"3\">Cheerful Choices<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Processed meat doesn\u2019t have a standard definition, however, colloquially, \u201cprocessed meat\u201d refers to an animal protein that \u201chas something done to it to flavor or preserve it,\u201d explains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/franceslrothrd\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">Frances Largeman-Roth, RDN<\/a>, a Dobbs Ferry, New York-based registered dietitian nutritionist and author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Everyday-Snack-Tray-Recipes-Nourish\/dp\/0800744993\/\" data-component=\"amazon\" data-source=\"affiliate\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Everyday Snack Tray<\/em><\/a>. \u201cThis can include adding seasonings, smoking, curing, canning, dehydrating, and salting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9991741\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">Examples of processed meats<\/a> include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/recipes\/healthy\/eating\/low-fat-heart-healthy-hot-dogs\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">Hot Dogs<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/recipes\/breakfast\/meats\/bacon-recipes\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\">Bacon<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/breakfast-sausage-recipes-8421015\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"3\">Sausage<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Salami<\/li>\n<li>Pepperoni<\/li>\n<li>Prosciutto<\/li>\n<li>Pancetta<\/li>\n<li>Jerky<\/li>\n<li>Deli meat<\/li>\n<li>Canned meat<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Animal protein that\u2019s broken down into parts (say, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/recipes\/chicken\/breasts\/chicken-breast-recipes\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">chicken breasts<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/chicken-thigh-recipes-7503491\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\">chicken thighs<\/a>) or ground up (such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/recipes\/healthy\/dinner\/easy-and-healthy-ground-beef-recipes\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"3\">ground beef<\/a> or turkey) is being processed into a different format, true. But these products aren\u2019t generally considered &#8220;processed&#8221; unless other ingredients are integrated to preserve or flavor the meat.<\/p>\n<h2>The Benefits of Processed Meat<\/h2>\n<p>All meat is a source of protein and essential vitamins and minerals, including iron and vitamin B12, Burgess explains.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Processed meats in particular are a \u201cpro\u201d because of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Price. <\/strong>They\u2019re almost always more budget-friendly than prime cuts of meat, \u201cmaking them accessible to more people,\u201d according to Burgess.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Food safety. <\/strong>Some kinds of processed meats are cooked as part of their processing, including jerky and deli meat. With these products, you won\u2019t have the risk of cross-contamination as you would with something like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/recipes\/how-to\/handling-meat\/safely-cook-a-turkey\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">raw turkey<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/should-you-wash-steak-8619968\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\">steak<\/a>. Opting for pre-cooked processed meats means that it will be quicker and easier to prepare a high-protein meal, too.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lifespan. <\/strong>Many meat processes aim to extend shelf life and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/upcycled-food-7368377\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"3\">reduce food waste<\/a>, which helps food remain fresher longer, Burgess adds. For context, when stored in a cool, dry place, canned chicken will last for at least 1 year, <a href=\"https:\/\/ask.usda.gov\/s\/article\/How-long-will-home-canned-food-keep\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"4\">the USDA says<\/a>. Raw meat and poultry should be cooked within 2 days and cooked meat and poultry should be consumed or frozen no later than 4 days after that, the <a href=\"https:\/\/ask.usda.gov\/s\/article\/How-long-can-I-keep-meat-in-the-refrigerator\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"5\">USDA<\/a> advises.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Flavor. <\/strong>Adding salt and other seasonings can enhance the flavor, Burgess and Largeman-Roth agree, making it more enticing to consume. Burgess asks, \u201cAfter all, food is only nutritious if it&#8217;s actually eaten, right?\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Versatility.<\/strong> From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/recipe\/open-faced-cuban-sandwich\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"6\">sandwiches<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/recipe\/greens-cannellini-beans-and-andouille-sausage-pan-stew\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"7\">skillet dinners<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/recipe\/cheesy-mashed-potatoes-with-gouda-and-crispy-pancetta\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"8\">holiday sides<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/recipe\/pressure-cooker-scrambled-breakfast-hash\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"9\">breakfast scrambles<\/a>, processed meats can be incorporated into a wide variety of meals and snacks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The Drawbacks of Processed Meat<\/h2>\n<p>Speaking of nutrition, that\u2019s the huge \u201ccon\u201d of processed meats. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/questions-and-answers\/item\/cancer-carcinogenicity-of-the-consumption-of-red-meat-and-processed-meat\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">2014<\/a>, the World Health Organization\u2019s (WHO) <a href=\"https:\/\/monographs.iarc.who.int\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\">International Agency for Research on Cancer<\/a>, evaluated both red meat and processed meat for their potential association to certain types of cancer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis recommendation was based on epidemiological studies suggesting that small increases in the risk of several cancers may be associated with high consumption of red meat or processed meat,\u201d the WHO explains. \u201cAlthough these risks are small, they could be important for public health because many people worldwide eat meat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since that\u2019s the case, processed meat was classified as a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/risk-prevention\/understanding-cancer-risk\/known-and-probable-human-carcinogens.html\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">group 1 carcinogen<\/a>,\u201d which means that there is sufficient evidence that it may play a role in increasing risk for at least one type of cancer. Other examples of group 1 carcinogens include alcohol, UV rays, and air pollution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvidence shows that even small amounts of processed meat eaten regularly increase the risk of colorectal cancer. Processed meats pose a greater risk of colorectal cancer than red meat that is unprocessed,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aicr.org\/cancer-prevention\/food-facts\/processed-meat\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">American Institute for Cancer Research<\/a>. This is believed to be the case because of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/what-to-know-about-foods-with-nitrates-and-nitrites.h00-159694389.html\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\">nitrates and nitrates<\/a> that many processed meat products include. (These are added to processed meats including pepperoni, sausage, bacon, and deli meat to keep them fresh longer.)<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the possible cancer relationship, \u201cprocessed meats have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/full\/10.1161\/CIRCULATIONAHA.109.924977\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">linked with<\/a> higher rates of diabetes and heart disease,\u201d Largeman-Roth says, which is likely due to the fact that many processed meats are high in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/recipes\/healthy\/low-sodium\/best-low-sodium-pantry-picks\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\">sodium<\/a> and saturated fat.<\/p>\n<h2>How to Incorporate Processed Meat into a Healthy Diet (If You Choose To)<\/h2>\n<p>Similar to driving or riding in a car, flying in a plane, or sipping a glass of wine with dinner a few times each week, eating processed meat is a calculated risk. Just like we wouldn\u2019t tell you never to get in a car again if that\u2019s your ideal way to get from point A to point B, \u201cit\u2019s fine to enjoy processed meat a few times a month, especially if you\u2019re balancing those meals out with other meals that are loaded with fresh produce,\u201d Largeman-Roth says, alongside whole grains, nuts, seeds, beans, and legumes.<\/p>\n<p>Moderation is key: <a href=\"https:\/\/keck.usc.edu\/news\/large-scale-study-explores-genetic-link-between-colorectal-cancer-and-meat-intake\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">Research<\/a> suggests that the more processed meat you eat, the higher your risk for potential health challenges.<\/p>\n<p>When choosing processed meats, Burgess suggests opting for products with the following features, if possible:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ingredients you can pronounce\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Sodium content below 350 milligrams<\/li>\n<li>Nitrate- and nitrate-free (these preservatives help <a href=\"https:\/\/livestock.extension.wisc.edu\/articles\/whats-the-deal-with-nitrates-and-nitrates-used-in-meat-products\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">prevent the growth of foodborne illness-causing bacteria<\/a>, but <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosmedicine\/article?id=10.1371%2Fjournal.pmed.1004149\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\">high consumption of them in an additive form<\/a> may be detrimental to health)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Largeman-Roth and Burgess are well-versed in the benefits and drawbacks of processed meat, and they both confirm that processed meat still has a place on their menus.<\/p>\n<p>Largeman-Roth \u201cloves hot dogs,\u201d especially during summer, and from time to time, she eats bacon and deli meat that\u2019s \u201craised humanely, without growth hormones or chemical nitrates or phosphates. Applegate is our go-to!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Burgess adds that she doesn\u2019t eat processed meat every day, \u201cbut I\u2019m definitely an \u2018all foods fit\u2019 kind of dietitian. I love having them occasionally, like a hot dog at a summer barbecue or bacon served at Sunday brunch,\u201d she says. \u201cMore regularly, I try to focus on filling my plate with plants first.
