Also known as the Witch\u2019s House in Beverly Hills, the magnificently mystical home looks like it\u2019s been plucked straight out of a fairytale \u2014 or a Hocus Pocus film set<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The history of the Spadena House<\/h2>\n

Originally built in 1921, the charming property was meant to serve as an office location and dressing rooms for Irvin Willat\u2019s film studio in Culver City, Calif.<\/p>\n

Willat was an American film director of the silent film era who directed 39 films between 1917 and 1937.<\/p>\n

To build the unique property, Willat commissioned Hollywood art director Harry Oliver, known for his work as a set designer for major motion pictures from the first half of the 20th century like Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ<\/em> (1925), Sparrows<\/em> (1926), Scarface<\/em> (1932), Mark of the Vampire<\/em> (1935), and The Good Earth<\/em> (1937).<\/p>\n

Moving to Beverly Hills<\/h2>\n

In 1926, the building was moved to its present location on the corner of Walden Drive and Carmelita Avenue in Beverly Hills and converted into a private home.<\/p>\n

Just blocks from the glitz and glam of Rodeo Drive, the unique home features tiny whimsical windows and pointy, lopsided roofs, and an intentionally dilapidated design, making it one of L.A.\u2019s most unique homes. <\/p>\n

The whimsical structure is now ranked as one of the city\u2019s best sights and historical landmarks<\/a>, alongside other Beverly Hills staples like Mulholland Drive, Rodeo Drive, the historic Lily Pond, or the Greystone Mansion. <\/a><\/p>\n

A perfect example of storybook architecture<\/h2>\n

Creating a bewitching effect in Los Angeles, storybook architecture offered an exaggerated medieval style with crooked walls, small, mismatched windows, prominent chimneys, and swayback, thatched roofs.<\/p>\n

Inspired by the beauty of Europe\u2019s cobblestone streets and ancient structures, this form of architecture included a wave of whimsical homes featuring dramatically different structural fads. Even Walt Disney lived in one.<\/a> <\/p>\n

\u201cThe thing that makes this property important is it set the bar for storybook architecture in Los Angeles during the \u201920s and \u201930s,\u201d<\/em> Kimberly Reiss of Beverly Hills Heritage told CNN<\/a> of the Witch\u2019s House.<\/p>\n

Fittingly, it was designed by a Hollywood art director<\/h2>\n

Described as the quintessential Hansel and Gretel house<\/a>, the Spadena House was designed by Hollywood art director Harry Oliver who worked on more than 30 films between 1919 and 1938.<\/p>\n

Unsurprisingly, its designer went on to play a major role in storybook architecture.<\/p>\n

Some of Harry Oliver\u2019s other designs include the original Van de Kamp Bakery windmill and Gold Gulch, the largest concession stand at the San Diego World\u2019s Fair.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Is it too boo-tiful to live in?\u00a0<\/h2>\n

Sure it\u2019s spook-tacular, but does anyone actually live there?<\/p>\n

Witch, please! The house has been inhabited since its move to the 90210<\/a>, almost a century ago. The witch house\u2019s first residents were the Spadena family, who lent the property their name.<\/p>\n

In the 1960s, a second family moved in and renovated the interior, making some exterior alterations including adding a skylight visible from certain angles.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As it turns out, the new owners were not<\/em> garden witches. They attempted to fill in the leaky moat, but once it hit the market again in 1997 it was a \u201csixties nightmare,\u201d according to the realtor Michael Libow.<\/p>\n

The property\u2019s own agent fell in love with it<\/h2>\n

Although Libow showed the house to several potential buyers with no interest, the seller simply forbade a teardown. And before too long, Libow fell under the spell of the mystical home.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it just hit me one day, and I thought, \u2018You know what? Why not?’\u201d<\/em> Libow told CNN about his decision to purchase the property.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cJump in; take a chance. I\u2019m big on taking risks.\u201d <\/em>So he ended up buying the house for himself.<\/p>\n

Over the next decade, Libow renovated and rebirthed the classic storybook home.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt gives me great joy to be able to bring joy to people who stop by to look at it,\u201d<\/em> Libow said of the home, which is now a Beverly Hills landmark.<\/p>\n

But don\u2019t expect a grand tour, Libow actually lives in the house. \u201cI\u2019m told, [it\u2019s] the most requested non-celebrity house to visit in Los Angeles,\u201d<\/em> he shared.<\/p>\n

How much is the Beverly Hills witch house worth? <\/h2>\n

Realtor Michael Libow took the property off the market back in 1998 and has been living inside the whimsical property ever since.<\/p>\n

Public records show that Libow paid $1,267,510 back in 1998 for the storybook home, but the witch\u2019s house is now worth well over $6,000,000. <\/p>\n

In fact, Zillow estimates its value at over $7 million, with Redfin<\/a> placing it in the $5 \u2013 $6 million range. And that isn\u2019t all that surprising given the property\u2019s enviable location and generous square footage.<\/p>\n

Sitting on a 0.29-acre lot in prime Beverly Hills (and sporting a highly desirable 90210 zip code), the storybook house packs 3 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms between its slightly crooked walls and 3,982 square feet of living space. <\/p>\n

Comparable properties in the area trade well above the $5 million mark \u2014 even without sporting a fairytale-like design<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In 1921, shortly after it was completed, the Witch\u2019s House made its first on-screen appearance in the silent film The Face of the World<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Since then, the unique home hit the Hollywood big screen in 1995\u2019s smash hit Clueless<\/em>.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cIt was strictly a background shot [with] Alicia Silverstone walking by the house,\u201d<\/em> said Libow. \u201cBut everybody respects the home for being in that movie.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Not to mention, the home has its own TripAdvisor page<\/a>. \u201cGreat for pictures for the Halloween season,\u201d<\/em> writes a reviewer.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
