They are technically classified as arachnids, the same class as spiders and mites, and they are parasites that feed off a host\u2019s blood.<\/p>\n<p>While not all of the hundreds of tick species worldwide are harmful to humans and animals, many carry pathogens that cause serious illnesses, such as Lyme disease. Some of these dangerous ticks are prominent in regions of the United States.<\/p>\n<p>According to Andrea Nilsson of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, ticks live on the ground and can climb grasses and bushes up to 27 inches, where \u201cthey find hosts with the help of temperature-sensitive cells.\u201d\u00a0Because tick bites are often painless, it can be difficult to sense the bug on your skin. However, you can do things in your yard to remove places they prefer and make the environment less hospitable for them.<\/p>\n<h2>Where Ticks Live in Your Yard<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cTicks\u00a0live on the ground and prefer areas with high humidity,\u201d says Laura Iles, director of the\u00a0North Central Integrated Pest Management Center at Iowa State University. \u201cIn a backyard, this is areas with tall grass or dense plantings. Ticks also love piles of leaves, stacks of mulch, and any other garden debris in a humid and moist environment.<\/p>\n<p>It is best to eliminate tall grass or weeds around wood piles. \u201cIf feeding birds, select feeders and seed that minimize the amount that is dropped to the ground, as this serves as food for [tick-carrying] mice,\u201d Iles says.<\/p>\n<h2>Natural Ways to Get Rid of Ticks<\/h2>\n<p>Get rid of ticks naturally by making your yard inhospitable to them.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Keep the yard tidy.<\/h3>\n<p>One way to naturally get rid of ticks in your yard is to remove what attracts them in the first place. \u201cClean up any leaves or fallen branches from the yard, stack any wood piles neatly (and in the sun to stay dry), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/gardening\/how-to-garden\/how-to-mow-a-lawn\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">regularly mow the lawn<\/a> to keep it short, so kids and pets can roam free in those areas.\u201d Payne says.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Grow tick-repelling herbs and garden plants.<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cTo naturally repel ticks, we planted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/gardening\/plant-dictionary\/herb\/lavender\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">lavender<\/a>, rosemary, basil, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/gardening\/plant-dictionary\/herb\/catnip\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\">catnip<\/a>, which deter ticks with their strong oils,\u201d says Payne. Install a rock or mulch barrier.<\/h3>\n<p>Areas with tall grass or undergrowth are the most likely places where\u00a0ticks\u00a0will be.\u00a0\u201cA 3-foot-wide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/home-improvement\/outdoor\/walkways\/wood-chip-path\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">mulch or rock barrier<\/a> placed between\u00a0a tick\u00a0habitat and the rest of the yard is a low-humidity area that\u00a0ticks are less likely to cross. Place any play or seating areas away from likely tick-friendly\u00a0habitats,\u201d Iles says.<\/p>\n<h2>How to Avoid Ticks in Your Yard<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019ve done what you can to repel ticks from your yard naturally, you still should stay vigilant and take precautions to avoid tick bites whenever you spend time outdoors.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Stay away from tick-prone places.<\/h3>\n<p>Stick to sunny areas of the yard. Ticks prefer shade. Avoid brushing up against dense vegetation where ticks may be waiting to hitch a ride. Remain in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/paver-patio-ideas-7506205\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">hardscaped areas such as patios<\/a> and decks as much as possible.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Wear protective clothing and insect repellent.<\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019ve spotted ticks in your yard, Nilsson recommends wearing protective clothing with long sleeves and tucking long pants into socks or boots. It&#8217;s also helpful to wear light-colored clothes to make it easier to spot any ticks on your clothing. When gardening, use insect repellent with permethrin-based insecticide on any exposed skin and apply it to socks or pant legs.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Check for ticks often.<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cRegular tick checks are key after being outside,\u201d Payne reminds. Check children, pets, and yourself after going out to wooded areas. Don\u2019t forget to look behind the ears and in the hair.
