Eva has indulged her love of food and explored her Mexican roots as host of CNN&#8217;s <em>Searching for Mexico<\/em>. The experience was so transformative, it inspired her to write a new cookbook, <em>My Mexican Kitchen<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>For anyone new to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/recipes\/ethnic-food\/mexican\/mexican-dinner-recipes\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">Mexican home cooking<\/a>, Longoria says the best thing you can do is stock up on some essentials. \u201cMexican food has a lot of staples with a long shelf life, so you can always throw a great meal together,\u201d she says. High-Quality Tortillas<\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;You have to have tortillas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/kitchen\/storage\/pantry\/kitchen-pantry-ideas\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">in your cupboard<\/a>,&#8221; Longoria says. &#8220;I like Siete brand because their tortillas are very malleable and they have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/recipes\/how-to\/bake\/flour-substitutes\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\">alternatives to grains<\/a>. They became famous because of their almond flour tortilla. Spanish Olive Oil<\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;A lot of Mexican cooking is done in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/recipes\/how-to\/cooking-basics\/olive-oil-vs-vegetable-oil\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">vegetable oil<\/a>, but I switch it out for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/olive-oil-types-6827206\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\">olive oil<\/a>. An olive oil with a very neutral taste changes everything. The burning point is better, the flavor it leaves is better, and it\u2019s healthier,&#8221; Longoria says. As for the best variety: &#8220;People think Italian is the best olive oil. It\u2019s not. It\u2019s Spanish. Pinto Beans<\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;I always have pinto beans in my pantry\u2014they&#8217;re a must,&#8221; Longoria says. &#8220;I\u2019m constantly making refried beans, charro beans, putting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/recipe\/pozole-with-pinto-beans-and-queso-fresco\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">beans in a soup<\/a>, I recommend pinto beans, but you could have any bean\u2013<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/recipes\/how-to\/cooking-basics\/how-to-cook-lentils\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\">lentils are also a good staple<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure>\n\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/thmb\/w3JaYDIM3at5uioEaaYQ9fwOeyM=\/fit-in\/640x480\/bhg-loisa-cumin-F2ReU874qWIBPsnSyPVH19-0005d0da0c8148d5a97a51a0da86e524.jpg\" alt=\"&lt;p&gt;Grant Webster&lt;\/p&gt;\" title=\"Loisa organic cumin spice\"><figcaption>\n\t\t<i><\/i><\/p>\n<p>Grant Webster<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>4. Flavorful Spices<\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;You have to have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/recipes\/how-to\/cooking-basics\/garlic-substitute\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">onion powder, garlic powder<\/a> and <em>comino<\/em> [powdered cumin]\u2014those three are essential for Mexican cooking,&#8221; Longoria says. One of her favorite brands is Loisa, which specializes in organic Latin American spices.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Cooking is how I make any place feel like home. Dried Chiles<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/recipe\/salsa-with-dried-chiles-and-tomatillos\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">Dried chiles<\/a>\u2014particularly ancho, guajillo, and arbol\u2014are vital to adding the signature Mexican flavor. The best part: They last for ages in a pantry. Fresh Staples<\/h2>\n<p>For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/recipes\/ethnic-food\/mexican\/fuss-free-tacos-tostadas\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">topping tacos<\/a> or salads, or making guacamole, &#8220;you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/recipes\/dinner\/15-ways-to-eat-avocado-for-dinner-281474979502870\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\">have to have avocados<\/a>, limes, and lemons. Top-Shelf Tequila<\/h2>\n<p>It may not be vital for cooking, but tequila is an entertaining staple for Longoria, who loves to greet guests with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/recipes\/drinks\/wine-cocktails\/make-a-party-ready-margarita-bar\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">fresh-made margaritas<\/a>: &#8220;I had a mixologist tell me, &#8216;If it\u2019s a great tequila, you don\u2019t want to hide it.
