Her application for long-term health care was denied because of a pre-existing health condition. You are announcing on our show a plan to ease the financial and emotional burdens on families like mine, caring for our aging loved ones. What is that plan?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris said that the issue was also personal for her, since she was in a similar situation when caring for her own mother, who died in 2009.<\/p>\n<p><iframe width=\"1005\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/I53CmGtXqjo?si=bRKc-M7cSzjYspO9&amp;start=1344\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cTaking care of a parent means trying to cook what they want to eat,\u201d Harris said. \u201cIt means picking out clothes for them that are soft enough [that] it doesn\u2019t irritate their skin. It means trying to think of something funny to make them laugh or smile. There\u2019s so much about that that really is about giving folks dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris also acknowledged the high number of people in the sandwich generation who find themselves stretched for both time and financial well-being.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s almost impossible to do it all, especially if they work,\u201d Harris said. \u201cWe\u2019re finding that so many are then having to leave their job, which means losing a source of income, not to mention the emotional stress. So, what I am proposing is that we allow Medicare to cover in-home health care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris also spoke about the need to support the overwhelming desire most seniors have, which is to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.housingwire.com\/tag\/aging-in-place\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">age in place<\/a> in their homes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople may be declining in skills to some extent, but their dignity and pride have not declined,\u201d Harris said. \u201cThey want to stay in their home; they don\u2019t want to go somewhere else. Plus, for the family, sending them to a residential care facility or hiring somebody is so expensive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In terms of financing such a proposal, Harris said that the plan is to continue bolstering Medicare\u2019s ability to negotiate prescription drug prices. This would build on the ability it has now to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2024\/08\/15\/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-announces-new-lower-prices-for-first-ten-drugs-selected-for-medicare-price-negotiation-to-lower-costs-for-millions-of-americans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">negotiate prices for 10 specific drugs<\/a> \u2014 which will add to the program\u2019s savings and facilitate more spending in areas like in-home care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose resources are best put toward helping a family like the one you\u2019re describing,\u201d Harris said.
