Mat Ishbia, the president and CEO of United Wholesale Mortgage <\/a><\/strong>(UWM), said last week he doesn\u2019t think that releasing Fannie Mae<\/strong> and Freddie Mac<\/strong> from conservatorship is a major focus for the Trump administration \u2014 and he isn\u2019t sure \u201cwhether it should be.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

One thing he is confident about: If ending the conservatorship results in higher mortgage rates,<\/a> it\u2019s unlikely the government will move forward with it. In fact, Ishbia<\/a> suggested the current arrangement is working well.<\/p>\n

\u201cQuite honestly, Fannie Mae<\/a> and Freddie Mac<\/a> are acting pretty good right now. It\u2019s been working pretty well. [They] spit off a lot of cash to the government,\u201d Ishbia said in a video<\/a> posted to YouTube<\/strong> on Monday.<\/p>\n

His comments follow recent posts by President Donald Trump on Truth Social,<\/strong> where he raised the possibility of releasing the government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs<\/a>). <\/p>\n

On May 21, Trump said he was giving \u201cserious consideration\u201d <\/a>to doing so. And on May 27, he said the federal government would continue to provide an implicit guarantee<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Federal Housing Finance Agency<\/strong> (FHFA) Director Bill Pulte<\/a> has stated publicly that any decision on ending the conservatorship would be up to the president.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cFannie Mae and Freddie Mac competing, innovating and doing different things with new leadership from Director Pulte is a big deal, and we\u2019re already starting to see some of those positive things happening right now,\u201d Ishbia said. <\/p>\n

\u201cFannie Mae and Freddie Mac acting more \u2018private,\u2019 but still being in conservatorship, might be the best of both worlds.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Since taking over at the FHFA, Pulte has cut staff<\/a> and top executives<\/a>; championed a return-to-office mandate; and tweeted out housing orders<\/a> that terminated special purpose credit programs (SPCPs), among other things. <\/p>\n

Pulte also publicly questioned<\/a> the cost of FICO<\/strong> credit reports and\u00a0announced a partnership between Fannie Mae and Palantir Technologies<\/strong> to root out mortgage fraud<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On regulatory oversight, Ishbia said that the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau<\/a> <\/strong>(CFPB)\u2019s approach under Trump would be more measured. According to him, the bureau is not trying to go after every mortgage company for every little thing. <\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re basically looking at more holistically and saying: \u2018Let\u2019s make sure we do right by consumers,\u2019\u201d Ishbia said.<\/p>\n

Trump recently pulled Jonathan McKernan\u2019s nomination<\/a> to lead the CFPB after tapping him for a leadership role at the Department of the Treasury<\/strong>. <\/p>\n
