Americans ages 60 and older filed 201,266 complaints with the \u0424\u0411\u0420<\/strong>\u2019s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) in 2025. And they reported losses totaling $7.75 billion \u2014 a 59% increase over the prior year, according to the agency\u2019s annual report.<\/p>\n

The average loss per senior<\/a> victim was $38,500, with more than 12,400 older complainants losing more than $100,000 each. Investment fraud \u2014 much of it involving \u043a\u0440\u0438\u043f\u0442\u043e\u0432\u0430\u043b\u044e\u0442\u0430<\/a> and fake trading platforms \u2014 inflicted the heaviest financial toll on seniors, with reported losses of $3.52 billion in 2025.<\/p>\n

Tech and customer support scams ranked second among older victims at $1.04 billion, followed by confidence and romance scams at $584 million, the \u043e\u0442\u0447\u0435\u0442<\/a> \u043e\u0431\u044a\u044f\u0441\u043d\u0438\u043b.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe scammers typically initiate contact through text messages, social media sites, advertisements, or dating applications and then quickly move the conversation to a messaging platform,\u201d the report said. \u201cOften, the victims are introduced to investment groups representing themselves to be knowledgeable industry insiders offering guidance on trading or investing in cryptocurrency or gold.\u201d<\/p>\n

Business email compromises \u2014 schemes that frequently target seniors closing on home sales \u2014 cost older victims $568 million across 4,566 complaints.<\/p>\n

\u041a\u0430\u043b\u0438\u0444\u043e\u0440\u043d\u0438\u044f<\/a> saw the largest number of senior complaints at 22,157, followed by \u0424\u043b\u043e\u0440\u0438\u0434\u0430<\/a> with 17,147 and \u0422\u0435\u0445\u0430\u0441<\/a> with 14,410. California seniors also led in losses by dollar volume at $1.4 billion.<\/p>\n

AI powers \u2018grandparent scams\u2019<\/h2>\n

\u0418\u0441\u043a\u0443\u0441\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0435\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0438\u043d\u0442\u0435\u043b\u043b\u0435\u043a\u0442<\/a> (AI) is giving traditional elder fraud new and dangerous sophistication.<\/p>\n

The IC3 received more than 3,100 complaints from seniors referencing AI in 2025 \u2014 with losses exceeding $352 million.<\/p>\n

Voice cloning can also be used to request wire payment in so-called \u201cgrandparent\u201d or \u201cdistress\u201d scams, in which voice cloning technology is used to mimic the sound of a loved one in distress. Victims claimed losses of more than $5 million in 2025 tied to distress scams.<\/p>\n

Data also shows this scam model evolving to mimic other family members or close friends in different types of emergency scenarios.<\/p>\n

Seniors filed 42,271 complaints amounting to losses of $4.35 billion involving cryptocurrency in 2025.<\/p>\n

Cryptocurrency ATMs and kiosks were a particular vulnerability. Victims 60 and older reported 6,188 such incidents, losing $257.5 million \u2014 a 58% increase in losses from 2024.<\/p>\n

The FBI said that scammers increasingly direct seniors to physical crypto kiosks, where cash can be converted to digital currency and sent instantly to overseas \u043c\u043e\u0448\u0435\u043d\u043d\u0438\u0447\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e<\/a> rings.<\/p>\n

To compound problems, the report added that criminals are now impersonating government officials and fake law firms to approach seniors who have already lost money \u2014 offering bogus recovery services for an upfront fee.<\/p>\n

Seniors reported $540 million in losses to recovery scams in 2025.<\/p>\n

Fighting back<\/h2>\n

The FBI\u2019s Recovery Asset Team froze $32.9 million of the reported $65.4 million in elder fraud cases initiated through the Financial Fraud Kill Chain in 2025.<\/p>\n
