Its scope includes Home Equity Conversion Mortgages (<a href=\"http:\/\/housingwire.com\/reverse-mortgage\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"housingwire.com\/reverse-mortgage\/\">HECM<\/a>), proprietary reverse mortgages and other home equity products designed for seniors.<\/p>\n<p>MBA said the network will work to identify key policy, regulatory and operational issues affecting senior-focused products and the broader age-based mortgage market. The group is also intended to ensure senior-lending priorities are reflected in MBA\u2019s advocacy agenda, education programming and member engagement efforts.<\/p>\n<p>The inaugural co-chairs \u2014 serving two-year terms \u2014 are <strong>\u041b\u043e\u043d\u0433\u0431\u0440\u0438\u0434\u0436 \u0424\u0438\u043d\u0430\u043d\u0441\u043e\u0432\u044b\u0439<\/strong> CEO Christopher Mayer and <strong>\u0413\u0438\u043b\u044c\u0434\u0435\u0439\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f \u0438\u043f\u043e\u0442\u0435\u043a\u0430<\/strong> managing director of reverse Jim Cory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMBA has recognized that there\u2019s really an opportunity in supporting senior lending,\u201d Mayer said in an interview with <strong>HousingWire\u2019s\u00a0Reverse Mortgage Daily<\/strong>. \u201cIf you want growth, you\u2019re either going to have to help more people buy homes at a younger age \u2014 you\u2019re going to have to focus on first-time home buyers \u2014 or you\u2019re going to have to focus on seniors, where there\u2019s a lot of demand for using home equity and for products that support seniors in retirement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The announcement comes as reverse and proprietary lending expands. In 2025, roughly $4 billion in first-lien reverse mortgages were originated in the U.S., with proprietary (non-HECM) products accounting for about half of all volume \u2014 roughly double 2024\u2019s proprietary production.<\/p>\n<p>Major forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.housingwire.com\/articles\/mutual-omaha-hecm-may-2026\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.housingwire.com\/articles\/mutual-omaha-hecm-may-2026\/\">\u043a\u0440\u0435\u0434\u0438\u0442\u043e\u0440\u044b<\/a> including <strong>\u0421\u0442\u0430\u0432\u043a\u0430<\/strong>, <strong>Guild<\/strong>, \u0438<strong> \u043a\u0440\u0435\u0434\u0438\u0442\u0434\u0435\u043f\u043e <\/strong>have also been moving into the space, Mayer said.<\/p>\n<p>According to Cory, the network is intended for companies already active in, or evaluating entry into, the senior-lending segment. \u201cThe challenges and opportunities in this segment are immense, and this network will play a key role in advancing solutions that make a real difference for borrowers and lenders alike,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-broader-than-just-reverse\">Broader than just reverse<\/h2>\n<p>Mayer added that the group was intentionally not branded as a reverse-mortgage forum because it is designed to address the senior demographic broadly, not a single product. He pointed that 1.5 million people age 62 and older applied for a mortgage last year, and 29% \u2014 about 450,000 \u2014 were rejected, often due to income-related qualification hurdles despite significant home equity.<\/p>\n<p>Mayer also emphasized that SMSN is meant to complement, not compete with, the <strong>\u041d\u0430\u0446\u0438\u043e\u043d\u0430\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0430\u044f \u0430\u0441\u0441\u043e\u0446\u0438\u0430\u0446\u0438\u044f \u043a\u0440\u0435\u0434\u0438\u0442\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0432 \u043e\u0431\u0440\u0430\u0442\u043d\u043e\u0439 \u0438\u043f\u043e\u0442\u0435\u043a\u0438<\/strong> (NRMLA). Mayer sits on NRMLA\u2019s executive committee, while Cory co-chairs NRMLA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNRMLA does a really good job supporting reverse mortgages, and what MBA is able to bring to the table, that\u2019s additive here, is institutions that don\u2019t offer reverse mortgages,\u201d Mayer said. \u201cThis is sort of: \u2018How do we grow the pie? How do we bring people in?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Participation in SMSN will require MBA membership, and operational details are still being finalized. MBA said the network will meet quarterly \u2014 primarily virtually \u2014 with at least one in-person meeting each year at an MBA conference.
